Appiano and surroundings: A hiking paradise for every type of holidaymaker

Hiking in the Appiano hiking hotel

Hiking is often associated with summer: escaping the heat in the valley, heading into the mountains and enjoying the fresh South Tyrolean mountain air. But around Appiano on the South Tyrolean Wine Road, hiking is a pleasure in every season. In spring, the blooming Spring Valley is a highlight; summer is perfect for exploring the mountains around Appiano; autumn brings beautiful trails through golden vineyards, while in winter the higher villages invite you to enjoy atmospheric walks.
The 4-star Hotel Christof is your ideal hiking hotel in Appiano, perfectly located for discovering the best hikes in Appiano and the surrounding area. Whether you prefer a leisurely walk, a family-friendly hike or a more challenging mountain tour, numerous trails and natural highlights are within easy reach of our hotel. Hiking in Appiano means discovering a remarkable variety of landscapes, a mild climate and spectacular views.
One of the highlights is the Three Castles Hike, taking you to Hocheppan Castle, Boymont Castle ruins and Schloss Korb – a rewarding route for families as well as anyone interested in history and culture. Another favourite is the Rastenbach Gorge near Lake Caldaro, where forest trails, waterfalls and beautiful views over Lake Caldaro create a memorable hiking experience.
Around 17 km from the hotel, the Passo Mendola opens up a beautiful mountain landscape with impressive panoramic views. The Non Valley and peaks such as Monte Luco are ideal for more experienced hikers looking for a challenge. For a gentler experience, explore the Forest of Monticolo and the two Lakes of Monticolo on a relaxing walk. And as early as February and March, the Spring Valley comes into bloom, transforming the landscape into a colourful sea of flowers.
Thanks to Hotel Christof’s central location, many other hiking destinations throughout South Tyrol can also be reached easily by car. Our hotel is therefore an ideal base for combining hiking, nature experiences and excursions through the South Tyrolean mountains.

Our personal hiking tips around Appiano

Many of our guests ask us over breakfast which hike we would recommend. Depending on the season, weather and fitness level, we suggest different routes – some starting directly in Appiano, others just a short drive from the hotel.
Among our personal favourites are the Forest of Monticolo and its two lakes and the fascinating Appiano Ice Holes. If you are looking for a quieter viewpoint away from the better-known trails, we recommend the Lipp viewpoint. From here, you can enjoy a wonderful view across Appiano, the vineyards and the Adige Valley – a peaceful spot that is easy to miss without a tip from someone who knows the area well.
Appiano is particularly beautiful in spring, when the apple and cherry trees are in bloom and the landscape around the vineyards is bursting with colour. From mid-September, the grape harvest begins and the vineyards take on warm shades of gold and red. For many of our guests, autumn is therefore the most beautiful season for hiking along the South Tyrolean Wine Road.
After a day of hiking, we are happy to recommend a traditional Buschenschank, a typical South Tyrolean farmhouse tavern, or a relaxing end to the day in our restaurant. Regional specialities, a good glass of wine from Appiano and the impressions of an active day in nature – for us, it is the perfect way to end a holiday day in South Tyrol.
